In August 2013, Universal Aquatics participated in a large scale pond construction project at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago, IL during Pondemonium. Several pond contractors participated in the event that helped reshape the aquatic landscape at the zoo. Three unique water features were constructed including a pond, a pondless waterfall system and a massive waterfall system with a bog/wetland filter were all constructed in only one day.

During the event, pond industry professionals attended hands-on pond building events to create, install and renovate several water features at the zoo. We also gained new knowledge at educational workshops, picked up construction tips from pond peers from around the world, learned the latest trends in water gardening and explored new product options for a variety of water features.

The projects at the zoo were led by the industry’s best and stars of the new pond building TV show Pond Stars on Nat Geo Wild, Aquascapes’ Ed Beaulieu and Brian Helfrich; along with many experienced water feature contractors sharing their professional knowledge. A dedicated bunch of Certified Aquascape Contractors (CAC) worked late into the darkness to finish up the largest waterfall project. While the animals at the Lincoln Park Zoo were already nestled in for their evening slumber, the CAC team turned on the pond pumps to thrust the amazing waterfall display into action. The lights from the excavator kept us company as we marveled at the accomplishment of the day’s events.
